Actualmente, ¿a qué y cuántos países exportáis?

No, nosotros nunca hemos recibido ninguna ayuda.

INTERVIEW WITH LEO , FROM LALANNE WINERY

Here´s the interview we did to Leo, from the Lalanne winery on Wednesday 30th March
·         What led you to settle a wine business in the Somontano?
Our winery started in Bordeaux , France in 1842 by our family . They had been cultivating the vineyard and making quality wines for years. At the end of the 19th century the phylloxera, an illness, affected all the vineyards in Europe. My family decided to look for places to grow vines. When they arrived to the Somontano in 1894 it wasn´t anything like it is today: there were no wineries , just people making homemade wine for themselves . When they arrived here they liked the weather, the area and the lands. They brought the grape varieties they had been growing: cabernet sauvignon ,  merlot…
To make them resistant against the phylloxera they used an American rootstock and grafted it to the vine.
They also brought the french château concept: the winery, the family house next to it and the vineyard surrounding both, and currently we have the same distribution. We have been here for 122 years, so we are the oldest winery in the Somontano. We are an artisan, traditional, small and familiar winery.

·
Have you repaired something in the wine cellar since you are in the Somontano?
My family built the new winery in 1894 and after the war they had to rebuild some things . Every year we repair or change floors, ceilings… because it´s such an old building we always have to change things to adapt to times and needs to keep on working well.

·         Are the employers from the family?

We have family workers, but also external workers.

·         Currently to how many and which countries are you exporting?

Mainly we´re exporting to European countries, because the procedures are easier and we have the same currency.
We export to France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and other countries in the EU.

·         What has the origine certificate meant to you?

When we were just five wineries here, it was when the origin certificate was created, and now there are 33-34 wineries .
The change has meant that now we have to share: nowadays as there are more wineries there´s more market and competitors , it´s more difficult to sell . But it´s also good, because we are more known , and under the certificate of origin there are stricter rules that guarantee the quality of the wine.

·         Since Spain entered the EU have you had more ways of comercialization ?

We´ve had it easier because the procedures are easier, exporting to a Non-European country is very bureaucratic , but exporting to the EU is easier.

·         Before entering the EU did you export to other countries?

During those years we exported a few times to the USA , but the procedures are complicated. Also there are other countries that put a lot of taxes and make the products really expensive, making it really hard to sell.

·         Has the Somontano wine route meant a change?

Sometimes people don´t know about the route, and when we give them the leaflet they are happy because all the wineries appear in there. This route promotes places, wineries, restaurants and museums. That is good because people see the winery and know the timetables to visit it. But nothing has changed.

·         Have you received any economical aid from the EU?

No, never. We´re self sufficent because nobody has given us anything and we´ve obtained everything with our effort, of which we are very proud.

·         How has the winery evolved?

In the last thirty years I remember that people came to buy wine, they tasted it and told you how many boxes or bottles they wanted. Nowadays hey also visit the wine cellar. We also do wine taste tests, and peope look at the wine, smell it, taste it carefully and enjoy it . With the wine culture the selling process has lengthened.

·         Has the Somontano evolved with the wine culture?

Yes, people from villages saw how many wineries were here, and decided to plant more vines to live from selling them, but then, there was a moment where there were too many grapes and the wineries wouldn´t buy it. This took them to create their own winery, and that´s why there are so many wineries nowadays.
·         In your winerie you also do events. Has that meant an evolution in the winery?

Yes, but that wasn´t planned. The idea came because people wanted to have dinner after visiting the wine cellar, so we put a small restaurant zone. People wanted to marry in here, so we started to celebrate weddings, and from April to October there are events, so we have had to adapt us. This is a business, but also a way to promote ourselves.

·       Is there any project in Lalanne winery´s future?

No, there isn´t, but we are always trying to improve in terms of facilities, policies, quality …

After this interview we think that economic European funds haven't helped them because they haven´t gotten any. They got it all from themselves. Entering the EU has benefitted them because there is a single market and a single currency that makes it easier to export the wine, because the procedures are easier and it is not necessary to change the currency.

Thanks to Leo for giving us this interview and explaining how his winery works.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In In 1945, after the second world war finished, some European countries decided to cooperate with them to avoid new wars and to get a better economic development  in Europe and compete all together against the big powers (USA and Sovietic Union). The idea was Robert Schuman's idea, French minister, in a speech on May 9th in 1950, date which nowadays is celebrated as the European day.
In 1951, Germany, France, Italy, Luxemburg and the Netherlands decided to join some of their energetic resources and created CECA (European comunity of Iron and Charcoal), In 1957, they signed "The Roman Treaty"  and built the Economic Europen Comunity and the Eupean Comunity of atomic energy (EURATON), Later, in 1993, the CEE was called the European Union and the Economic Union was decided in that age. It came true in 2002.
In this video, made by us, you can see who formed the European Union initially and the different changes that have been taking place.
